Other shale barrens on property to west appear less rich but also include Kate's Mountain Clover - these are located (predictably) on steep southwest aspects, separated by dry mesic white oak forest.;Steep slope near nose above confluece of unamed drain with Capon Springs Run. Possible geologic break with exposed bedrock (sandstone?) and crumbly shale. Presence of junipur and chinquapin may indicate calcerous soil. Shrubs are nearly absent except small stubbs, indicating deer herbivory. Herb layer is dominated by poverty oats and pennsylvanica sedge with shale barren endemics present. Chinquapin seem to be dying - drought? - or severely stunted.
